Why do fur coats need cold storage?

Why do fur coats need cold storage?

A fur will last longer when it's stored in a cold storage.

Our professional fur coat wardrobes have the following features:

• 2-12 Celsius (35-50° Fahrenheit)
• Controlled hydrometry between 45 and 55%
• Minimal U.V. minimal light exposure
• Ventilated space for each item
• Easily accessible (you can take your fur coat if it's suddenly cold weather)

Why cold storage for fur coats?

Moths... they thrive on wardrobes full of cashmere, wool, fur and other fabrics made from animal hair.
So this cold storage for fur coats is the way to protect your clothes without resorting to mothballs.

When temperature gets colder, the molecules slow down.
In biological materials, the less molecular activity, the slower the biodegradation process.

Why regulate humidity?

Humidity is important when a fur stays in one place for a long time.
If the humidity is too low: dry air, the natural oils of the hides evaporate faster and the garment dries out and deteriorates.
If the humidity is too high: humid air, skins can rot quickly.

Minimal light exposure

A fur coat also better hangs in the dark. Direct light on the fur can cause it to oxidize and change the color of your fur. This is also the case for lambskin, leather and suede.

Some more caring tips:

It is ideal to store your fur coat in a wardrobe that you use regularly, so the fur is also regularly aired.

Always use the wide hanger that comes with your fur coat purchase. Make sure that the garment is not squeezed between other garments so that air can circulate freely around each garment.

Don't hang your fur in the basement. Most cellars are too humid for fur storage. Do you have a place in your house where it's always relatively cool? Then this is the right place to storage your fur at a cold temperature.

Never use a plastic cover to store your fur as it prevents air circulation around your fur. If you hang the fur coat in a closet, a fabric cover is not necessary. A fabric cover is primarily intended for transporting jackets.

Don't leave your fur in natural light or in the sun: it will suffer like any natural material off discoloration.
